With Gabriel (Bosco Mann) Roth at the helm, Naomi and company went into the studio Summer 2013, and cut onto tape what can only be described as bonafide Soul Excitement of the highest order! At the heart of it, Cold World is a Soul record but the cross section of sub-genres the album weaves through makes it difficult to label it plainly as such. There are tracks like ‘Sinner’, ‘Heaven Is Mine’, and ‘Humble Me’ that capture the group’s penchant for Soul grooves, seasoned with Naomi’s tough vocal delivery, and the Queens melodic interplay, which captures perhaps better than any of the other tracks, NSGQ’s live show. Then there’s some hard funk by way of ‘Bound for the Promised Land’, ‘Cold World’, and ‘Thank You Lord’ – the percolating church rave-up of ‘Get Up, Child’, the country heavy ‘One Day’, and ‘I Earned Mine’, and the bouncing rumba of ‘Everybody Knows.’ This album is a menagerie of Soul music at its finest, untied by the strong message-laden lyrics. Trust us, the wait was worth it.

We are inching closer and closer to the release of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings’ Give The People What They Want but we have two things to help you while you wait.
First things first, NPR Music is streaming the record in it’s entirety today. They had this to say about the album, “Set, as always, against The Dap-Kings’ characteristically springy horns, Jones growls and struts through 10 timeless songs that couldn’t sound better suited to the big stage. It’s to her credit that the studio serves them, too, throughout an album that deftly and efficiently carries out the mission suggested by its title. She wasn’t gone long, thank goodness, but it’s so nice to have her back.”
And if the stream wasn’t enough for you, we are exciting to announce that the brand new video for “Stranger to My Happiness” is premiering today at VEVO. Huge thanks to Rob Hatch-Miller and Puloma Basu at Production Company Productions for their great work on the video.
Enjoy both the stream and video premiere and don’t forget to pre-order Give The People What They Want from the Daptone Super Soul Super Store.
